MANNERS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

Now that you are a member of the riders of the Weyr, there are certain rules of behavior you must follow. Impressing a dragon and joining the Weyrling ranks is the beginning of your inclusion to an institution in service to Pern. Regardless of your pre-Impression rank, you are all equals here, and it's a lot like starting over in a new craft. Some of you come from crafts or a hold where you held your own status. But here, you are all apprentices again. In the same sense that you are apprentices, the WLM is your craftmaster and your AWLMs are your Masters. You are here to learn from them. They, in return, expect unquestioning obedience and respectful behaviour of you. This is critical because obeying orders constantly and without question can make the difference between success and a rider or, worse yet, a dragon, getting hurt or going between forever. It could mean the difference between thread being seared or valuable crops and livestock as well as lives being lost.

So part of Weyrlinghood is learning to be respectful and obey those with authority over you. It's not always easy; in fact, it can be difficult when it seems every rider in the Weyr, as well as the headwoman and all crafts people, have chores and errands for you to do. Please follow directions given to you by those who rank you, but ultimately instructions given by the WLM are those you must follow first, followed by the AWLMs and those of the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman.

Think of the WLM as your Wingleader. Normally all instructions to you of a critical nature will be passed to the WLM from the Weyr leadership. The AWLM is the Wingsecond, and his/her instructions are followed to the letter. Finally, if you feel mistreated or you feel you are being treated out of proportion, badly, or given more tasks than you should be by some individual, please bring it to the attention of the WLM or AWLM, but don't argue with the person in question. We expect a lot of you, but in return, you deserve the WLM staff's best effort on your behalf, so be sure to know they'll give it.
